Learning to Interpret Great Works of Art

When asked to compare Claude Monet’s painting, “Sunrise”, from a visual art form to one with a musical theme, third grade student, R. Cavazos, wrote the following in Music class with Ms. G. Careaga:

This painting captures the union between the sunlight and the water almost like a “beat”. (the unit of musical rhythm)

The water, the sun and the light are almost like a “trio”. (a composition written for three voices and instruments performed by three persons)

The bright orange of the sun makes it a focal point of the image almost like a “recital”. (a solo concert with or without accompaniment)

Painting Title: Impression, Sunrise (Impression, Soleil Levant 48cm x 63cm or 19 x 24 3/8" - Oil on canvas Claude Monet, 1872 Famous French impressionist painter

Ojo de Dios

January 8, 2009

Dear Oratorian Parents,

As you may already know, my students in 5B placed Second in the 2008 Christmas IMAS Guild decorating contest at the IMAS International Museum of Art & Science in McAllen, located at 1900 Nolana. It was called "The IMAS Guild presents: The 2008 Christmas Tree Forest." Our tree was decorated with the "Ojo the Dios" made by my students. The question was, "Who Came to Texas?" Entrants were invited to decorate a tree with handmade decorations to commemorate one of the many ethnic groups who came to Texas and helped make it such a vibrant and productive state. Art teacher, Mrs. Tobin selected the Mexican cultural tradition of the "Ojo de Dios". Mrs. Mendiola and I simply volunteered to assist in making the ornaments. It truly is an honor to have received Second Place out of 30 schools. I’m very proud of my class.

God Bless
